OCD Week & ADHD Awareness Month

Children and adults living with Tourette Syndrome (TS) are often impacted by

As recognized by the Tourette Association of America (TAA) and other researchers, approximately 85-90% of those living with TS are likely to be diagnosed with a co-occurring condition. Most commonly of those co-occurring conditions are Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorders or Behaviors (OCD/OCB), Anxiety and Sensory Processing Disorders.

Often times, these co-occurring conditions can be “hidden below the surface” of the tics themselves and can often times go undiagnosed or untreated. The TAA depicts this with a great visual of the Tourette Iceberg.

Recognizing that often times, the co-occurring conditions can be as limiting as or even more limiting than the tics themselves, it is important to celebrate awareness and promote advocacy for these components affecting those living with Tic Disorders.

Luckily, October is a busy month for promotion and awareness advocacy for two of the common co-occurring disorders; ADHD and OCD.OCD Week 2018

  • Sunday October -October 13, 2018 is the International OCD Foundation Awareness Week. This week is dedicated to promote unity, awareness and support for those who suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and related disorders with the end goal of “helping more people to get timely access to appropriate and effective treatment.”
  • October 2018 is ADHD Awareness Month. This month is dedicated to “Setting the Record Straight” about the neurobiological disorder that can often impact school, work and family life.

In order to promote support, we recognize these national programs and advocacy centers by sharing ways to advocate and spread awareness.

  1. Advocate Awareness on Social Media
    1. Use Hastags in your social media posts:

    2. Share your pride by using these #OCDweek promotional photos throughout your social media and community
    3. Show your support by adding a “Twibbon” to your Facebook or Twitter account profile picture during #OCD week.
    4. Participate in awareness contests, such as the ADHD Awareness Video Contest
  2. Learn More & Share More
    1. Join webinars and trainings sessions to learn more
      1. #OCDWeek Facebook Live Q & As that are scattered throughout the week
      2. ADHD Month TADD Talks\
    2. Provide others with Information Fact Sheets regarding OCD & ADHD

      2. ADHD Awareness Handouts & Fact Sheets
    3. Share Awareness Videos
      1. #RealOCD Videos
      2. ADHD is Real Video or 31 Myths in 31 Days
  3. Participate in an Event near you
    1. Participate in an Awareness Walk or Event
      1. Find an #OCDWeek Awareness Walk
      2. Find an ADHD Awareness Month Event near you or start a walk
    2. Host a party documenting a popular movie or show with someone living with OCD and/or ADHD. Use that time to discuss the stigmas, stereotypes and share the actual reality of having this condition.
    3. Participate in an Advocacy Campaign with your government by sending a letter to your paper or local government.
